I never saw the soiled handkerchief around his neck. When I rented the apartment from him, there were three old dogs who had just moved out. The first time I went into the basement to do laundry, there they were! They had not left, but were sleeping in a dark dusty corner. Also in this dark corner stood a tall hollow figure. I immediately realized that they could be a real threat, with a name that exists, but lacks the wild pang and serenity of a Tuscan landscape.
